The Village of Aboyne.

Aboyne is centred on the village green around which stand the houses and hotels of the 19th century and on the railway station which having lost its trains in 1966 has been restored and and developed as an attractive shopping area including a small Co-op supermarket. East Toll is a very short walk from these amenities.

Slightly further but still within walking distance to the east is the attractive golf course with views of the surrounding hills and two lochs while on the western side of the village is the community centre and swimming pool where visitors are welcome.

Other facilities include a bowling green, all weather tennis court, fishing and shooting, water skiing on Aboyne loch and gliding at the Deeside Gliding Club three miles to the west.

Every year since 1867 the town has hosted the Aboyne Highland Games which are now held on the first Saturday in August on the Green.

One of the attractions of a holiday in Aboyne is the opportunity for all kinds of walking from gentle strolling along the river to energetic hikes up old droving roads such as the Fungle and the Firmount.

Five miles to the west of Aboyne on the Muir of Dinnet National Nature Reserve are the lochs of Kinnord and Davin, the sites of ancient settlement, and a beautiful area to explore on foot.

Other places in the area include the former royal hunting grounds of the Forest of Birse, Potarch Park and the Braeloiune Visitor Centre in the Forest of Glen Tanar. The high mountains of Lochnagar and the Cairngorms are within an hour’s drive from Aboyne.
