From Perth the A90 dual carriageway continues to Aberdeen via Dundee, Forfar and Stonehaven. At Aberdeen cross the River Dee at the first bridge and continue up North Anderson Drive to its junction with Great western Road. Turn left at the traffic lights and travel west leaving Aberdeen through Cults, Bieldside, Peterculter, Drumoak, Crathes, Banchory and Kincardine o’ Neil. Approaching Aboyne from the east the road passes Aboyne Loch on the right then a Shell filling station also on the right. After the road completes its curve to the right take the first opening off the left onto Old Ballater Road - East Toll is the first building on the right.
Of the three routes to Aboyne this is the easiest but is the least scenic.
A much more interesting route from Perth to Aboyne is to go by Braemar. From Perth take the A93 to Blairgowrie continuing into Glen Shee then passing through Bridge of Cally, Blacklunnans and Spittal of Glenshee before reaching the highest point of the road (2,199ft) at The Cairnwell. This is mountainous country but the road is good and the scenery breathtaking. The route is now all downhill into and through Braemar along the Dee Valley passing Braemar Castle, Balmoral Castle, Crathie Church, Ballater, Dinnet and then Aboyne.
This route is longer but if time is available and the weather good it is well worth it. Aboyne is entered from the west along Ballater Road as described below.
A third way is to follow the A90 to Dundee continuing past Forfar to Stracathro Hospital. A few miles further at Northwater Bridge turn off left onto the B974 to Fettercairn. Turn right here under the arch and continue past Fasque and Clatterin Brig. Here the road starts to climb reaching its highest point (1483 ft) at Cairn o’ Mounth where it is worth stopping for the magnificent view. Continue on the B974 past Bridge of Dye to an AA box where the road forks. Take the left fork and at the next T-junction go left on the B976 passing Finzeean, Marywell and Birse. This is the South Deeside Road and Aboyne is reached by crossing the Dee at Aboyne Bridge. Continue straight ahead and at the T-junction turn right onto the A93. This is Ballater Road and passing Aboyne Green on the right take the third road to the right at the Aboyne Pharmacy.
East Toll is now within sight on the left opposite ’The Sign of the Black Faced Sheep’ which serves excellent coffee.
